Walking: An Effective Calorie Burner
One of the most popular and easiest ways to stay
fit is by walking. Believe it or not, walking burns
more calories than running. A brisk walk of about five
miles in an hour burns 530 calories, compared to 480
for jogging. The reason: walkers take more steps and
use their arms more.
The benefits of brisk walking include:
- Reduced risk of heart disease: An athlete’s coronary arteries are dilated 2-2 1/2 times the normal person’s.
- Reduction of cholesterol: Walking a 16-minute mile lowers cholesterol as much as running a mile in 7-10 minutes.
- Reduction in weight: Oh, don’t we all want to reduce! Every mile you walk or jog (at any pace) burns about 100 calories.
- Lowers blood pressure, thereby reducing the need for drugs to lower blood pressure.
- Helps diabetics lower their blood sugar, eliminating the need for insulin in many.
- Helps asthmatics to produce their own adrenaline and breathe better.
- Improves the immune system. An improved immunity can fight all diseases and improve longevity and quality of life.
- Reduces stress and tension: Living free from anxiety and strain in this day and age is not easy. The pre-dawn moments are cool, calm, and quiet. It is a wonderful time to walk with the Lord, spending precious moments with Him as you walk along.
